Oslo nightlife

Oslo: nightlife and clubs

Oslo Nightlife: Although Oslo is famous for its cold nights, its nightlife isn't cold or lazy at all. There are concerts, events and a wide range of quality clubs, bars and restaurants for an extraordinary night out. The guide to the best nightclubs in Oslo.

Oslo nightlife

Oslo is famous for its historical and cultural stature. It is considered one of the best cities in the world to live in and the best city in Norway. Among the richest cities in Europe, the capital of Norway is a city in continuous expansion and development that offers numerous attractions to those who visit it, such as its museums, from the architecture museum to the Contemporary Art and Design museum up to the National Gallery , which houses the masterpiece of Edvard Munch, "The Scream" . Ski enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Ski Museum and Holmenkollen , which hosts the World Ski Jumping Championships.

But even at night, Oslo doesn't disappoint. Norway's climate is famous for being cold, especially its nights are very cold. But to be honest, Oslo's nightlife is by no means cold or boring and, especially on weekends, the city warms up with its dynamic and sparkling nights, full of fun and lightness.

Oslo by night

Oslo is full of night clubs, pubs and discos , which offer different types of music and atmospheres. The choice ranges from small and traditional bars, ideal for an evening of drinks with friends, up to the most exclusive discos where you can dance to all kinds of music and meet people from all over the world. House music, drum'n'bass, hip pop, indie pop, alternative rock, soul, r'n'b, with international bands, DJs and artists who often stop for a mid-week show in little Oslo. Almost every night you can be sure to find a talented Norwegian or international DJ playing at some nightclub in Oslo.

Nightlife Oslo nightclubs
Nightlife and discos in Oslo

Oslo nightlife always starts with an after dinner drink or beer in one of the many pubs or bars in the centre. Most of the bars are relaxing family cafés during the day, but transform into trendy discos after dark, hosting evenings with DJs and music until late at night. There are tons of bars with live music, ideal for a romantic evening listening to good blues, jazz, folk, rock and many other genres. The bars in the center of Oslo generally stay open until 3.00 , while those located outside the center close early.

The nightlife of the Norwegian capital is famous for its numerous concerts . In fact, Oslo hosts concerts for every taste and every day of the year, with a music scene centered above all on jazz music, but also blues, alternative rock and punk. You can find evenings with live music in most of Oslo's nightclubs, which host concerts several times a week.

The summer season sees the presence of numerous free festivals and concerts , among which we mention the Jazz Festival and the night of culture . The latter takes place once a year on one of the Fridays in September. On this evening, the best of Oslo's art and music is accessible to all. Throughout the night there are free concerts, art shows and parties. A good opportunity to explore Oslo's culture and nightlife . To stay up to date on all Oslo events , check out the NATT & DAG for all the updates.

However, Oslo's nightlife has some quirks and disadvantages:

Age Limit
All nightclubs that serve alcohol have a minimum age limit of 18 in the evenings and the clubs mostly cater for people 23 or even 25 years of age and older. If you are 17 or younger, there are unfortunately few alternatives. Usually on Thursdays most clubs allow 18-year-olds to enter before 11.00pm, while on Fridays and Saturdays the age rises up to 20-23 years. To remedy this inconvenience, many Norwegian students and young people organize house parties , in which everyone brings a few bottles purchased at the supermarket (bring your own bottle) and they start drinking already in the late afternoon!

Cost of living
Oslo is one of the most expensive cities in the world and, consequently, also its nightlife is certainly not low cost! In particular, spirits are very expensive, especially wine and spirits are under the state monopoly. For pre-evening, young Norwegians go to the nearest supermarket or "Vinmonopolet" to buy wine or spirits at cheaper prices, and then drink at home or in the park before going out. While supermarkets sell beer, bottles of wine and other spirits can only be purchased in Vinmonopolet, which close around 18.00 during the week and on Saturdays, while they are closed on Sundays.

Vorspiel culture in Oslo
If you plan to spend an evening in Oslo with the locals, then you need to get acquainted with the quintessentially Norwegian nightlife phenomenon called “vorspiel” . It is a pre-party, a party before the real party, where beers, glasses of wine or maybe a couple of long drinks are consumed. The reason for this ritual is simple: as alcohol and tobacco are heavily taxed in Norway, young people gather to drink in someone's apartment before going out, to get a little tipsy without breaking the bank. These pre-night parties are often more fun than the actual clubbing, even though most are completely inebriated before they even hit the threshold of the club. In contrast to the vorspiel which take place in the early evening, late night are the "nachspiel" , the after-parties which take place after Oslo's nightclubs stop serving alcohol or close.

Games in bars
Another oddity of Oslo's nightlife is the habit of bars offering numerous games such as shuffleboard, table tennis or minigolf. Locals will tell you that since Norwegians tend to be very secretive until they've had a few drinks and aren't too fond of chatting, games help give them something to focus their attention on until the drinks are over. will have worked on their inhibitions.

Oslo neighborhoods and nightlife

The center of Oslo
The nightlife of Oslo is mainly concentrated in the city center . Here you will find many bars, discos and nightclubs with a wide choice of live music genres: along Karl Johan you will find places to dance to the rhythm of the latest commercial hits, near Youngstorget the music is more alternative and rock, up to clubs with concerts of jazz and blues music.
