Istanbul Nightlife: Located between two continents and with over 15 million inhabitants, Istanbul is a city that never sleeps and offers vast options for nightlife, with plenty of bars, nightclubs and concert halls. If you like to party you will not be disappointed!
Istanbul nightlife
Lying on the Bosphorus Strait, the Turkish city of Istanbul is famous for its attractions and monuments, such as the Blue Mosque, ancient ruins, Turkish baths, numerous museums and palaces and delicious local food.
But Istanbul is not only a city full of charm, intense aromas and flavors, but it is also appreciated for its fervent nightlife . Its nightlife is very active, dynamic and engaging. The Turks like to have fun and, as the sun goes down, many young people and tourists invade the streets of the city.
Istanbul's nightlife is one of the liveliest and most animated and can be compared to that of the great European capitals. The scenographic nightclubs alternate with the small bars with jazz music with a more intimate atmosphere and offer entertainment for all tastes. Despite the opening of increasingly trendy and European nightclubs, Istanbul's nightlife has managed to retain its traditional side , with the presence of markets and bazaars, bars where you can smoke a hookah or eat typical oriental dishes.
The streets are full of bars that stay open until late at night and discos that close only when the sun rises. In the summer months, you can sip a cocktail or a glass of wine on one of the large panoramic terraces that offer an enchanting view of the city and the Bosphorus. Or why not attend a traditional Turkish dance show? In the center of Istanbul you will find numerous tourist spots where you can dine and attend one of these Turkish dance and belly dance shows .
If you want to immerse yourself in the authentic Turkish nightlife, head to one of the many Meyhane , typical family-run taverns where you can taste traditional Turkish dishes and get in touch with the locals, immersed in a cheerful and jovial atmosphere. Meals are always accompanied by a glass of "raki", a local anise-flavored grappa. Among the best meyhane in Istanbul we can recommend Seviç , a restaurant with an authentic atmosphere, particularly popular with tourists (it is best to book in advance). The birahane represent the more rustic version of the meyhanes: here flow a lot of beer and raki than the former and are frequented mainly by men.
The districts of Istanbul and the nightlife
Istanbul is a very large city and is divided into several districts. Some are more lively than others and you need to know where to go to fully experience the city nightlife.
Beyoglu
Istanbul's nightlife is more developed in the Beyoglu , which starts from Taksin Square and continues along the pedestrian street “Istiklal Caddesi” . From Thursday to Sunday, the place comes to life, with restaurants always full of people, lots of partying and live music that resounds from one club to another. Trendy shops and bars, clubs with live music and lots of young people. This is definitely one of the best areas to go out at night in Istanbul .
Taksim
The modern center is the most famous of Istanbul, Taksim offers shops, bookstores, cinemas but above all, many pubs and discos. You can watch a movie in the nostalgic theater, climb the Galata Tower and watch the city, get drunk and stroll the streets, visit an art gallery, or dance in a nightclub. Taksim offers countless food options, musical genres, price ranges and types of entertainment, from gay clubs, to Turkish folk music bars, to electronic music clubs and typical meyhane taverns. Here the night starts early and ends very late. Move to Galatasaray to find plenty of cheap cafes and bars populated by students partying late into the night.
Bosphorus
During the summer season, the best place to party in Istanbul is on the shores of the Bosphorus . In the warmer months, the neighborhoods on the Bosphorus are raided by the population and the big clubs of Istanbul open their rooftop terraces with exceptional views of the Bosphorus and the Asian coast. In winter, however, the clubs on the Bosphorus close their terraces and the party moves to the heart of the city, to the small underground clubs and bars.
Ortakoy
The nightlife here is more homogeneous than in the other districts. A long coastline full of elegant, luxurious and beautiful nightclubs. Almost all of them have stunning views of the Bosphorus Bridge. Here there are nightclubs frequented by celebrities and political figures . It is definitely a privilege to enjoy a drink and dance while looking at the Istanbul skyline, its historic and shining buildings and the Sea of Marmara. In the center of Ortaköy you will also find cheaper bars and clubs. You can also sit on the shore and grab a beer from a market, watch the sea and the boats.
Karaköy
Located on the left bank of the Galata Bridge, Karaköy is the most popular and fast moving district of Istanbul . The atmosphere is very hipster, almost every day there is a new bar, restaurant or new club. Most of the old forges, fabric factories and ateliers are now art galleries, vintage shops and designer shops. Most of the bars serve delicious and sophisticated food until 10pm and then turn into a dance floor with good music. Sometimes the party moves to the street due to being too crowded.
Kadiköy
The Kadiköy district , located in the Anatolian part of Istanbul, has recently become very popular. Here you will find streets full of old wooden buildings that now house trendy bars, restaurants and cafes. It is a cleaner, cozier and quieter area of Taksim, although most bars close after 1.00.
Bagdat Street is the most famous street in the Kadiköy area. Besides being the center of shopping, there are bars and clubs that are a little more expensive than average. Just note the very expensive cars that pass on this road. It is a 9 mile long road, parallel to the Sea of Marmara, which is very popular with young people who come here for shopping, having a coffee or a cocktail.
Besiktas
Here you can savor the authentic atmosphere of a Turkish neighborhood that has not yet felt the touch of gentrification. During the day you see people shopping from the arcades, young people exercising on their skateboards on a hot summer day, and people of all ages drinking tea at street kiosks. At night the streets around the fish market get crowded, joyful and drunk. Around the fish market there are taverns serving seafood and raki. Other places are mostly visited by young people. Prices are average, not expensive. Except for the nightclubs located on Akaretler Street . Here you can find luxurious bars, lounges and clubs.
